Visiting Scholar - Sorour Arzhang

Sorour Arzhang is a Ph.D. candidate in Department of Plant Breeding and Biotechnology at Urmia University, Iran. She is currently a Visiting Scholar in Dr. Zhiwu Zhang Lab at Washington State University. With a strong background in biometrical genetics, her research mainly focuses on molecular breeding and Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) to identify candidate genes controlling important agronomic production traits in maize. Sorour is also doing the transcriptome analysis of maize in response to salt stress by RNA-sequencing to identify potential salt tolerance gene networks. It is expected that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive lines can be identified, and the salt-stress responsive genes can be discovered. Her goal is to learn applying high throughput technologies, such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) that allow a great leap forward in plant breeding and promote genomic breeding.
